Types of riding jackets and coats

In order to be able to withstand all weather conditions as a rider during training or in the stable, the choice of the right riding clothes is crucial. With the right riding jacket, bad weather in the stable or on a hack no longer plays a role!

Depending on the season and weather, different types of riding jackets are used. In addition to the seasonality, a distinction is also made between the material of the riding outerwear.

1. Summer and between seasons

In transitional seasons such as spring or autumn, riders often feel the temperature changes. Even in summer, temperatures may cool down in the early and late hours of the day. A light and at the same time functional between-seasons jacket, which specifically addresses the climatic conditions in the transitional months and in summer, protects against wind and weather and at the same time convinces with a great look. A water-repellent summer and transitional jacket helps riders get the most out of rainy days in spring and summer. Typical for the transitional seasons is inconsistent weather, which is accompanied by many rain showers and wind, but mostly mild temperatures. For comprehensive advice on summer and transition jackets, see our summer and between-seasons jackets guide.

Advantages: light and functional, adapted to the climatic peculiarities in the summer and transitional months.

Disadvantages: The limit of breathability is at temperatures above 25°C. Above that, this property is very limited.

2. Soft shell riding jackets

Riders who spend a lot of time outdoors and are therefore exposed to different weather conditions need functional riding clothes that neither restrict movement nor are too heavy or even uncomfortable. The stretchable material and ergonomic cut of our soft shell jackets for riders ensure optimum freedom of movement and provide best comfort when riding, in the stable and in everyday life. Riding jackets made of windproof and water-repellent soft shell material are therefore the ideal companions through the wet and cold transitional season, when thickly lined riding coats are still too warm and the thin summer jacket is still too cool. For more information, please read our soft shell jacket guide.

Advantages: lightweight material with windproof and water-repellent properties for the wet and cold transitional season.

Disadvantages: Not suitable for heavy rain

Price: £49.90 to £139.00

3. Winter riding jackets

Icy cold winters on horseback and in the stable pose functional challenges for both our riding accessories and our riding clothes. Riding gear must keep both horse and rider warm and protect them from moisture. A must in the cold season is definitely a thickly padded, warm riding jacket for winter. In addition to heat-insulating properties thanks to the lining with faux down, a water-repellent function of the winter riding jacket is irreplaceable. Whether with a cosy fur hood or a high stand-up collar that protects against icy drafts – thanks to the pleasantly soft padding, our thermal riding jackets for women always provide cosy warmth. Find out more about riding outerwear in winter in our winter riding jacket guide.

Advantage: thanks to their heat-insulating and water- and wind-repellent properties, winter riding jackets are the perfect companion in the stable during the cold seasons.

Whether it’s a durable waterproof and weatherproof jacket with a warm fleece lining or a thickly lined winter parka, our riding coats have the right model for every preference. You can get comprehensive advice on our riding coats and parkas in our riding coat and parka guide.

5. Rain riding coats

If you don’t want to miss out on a hack with your horse even in rainy weather, you should go for waterproof rain riding coats. Rain coats are also recommended for daily training in the riding arena. Rainwear for riders must be well cut and should not restrict movement in the saddle. To prevent riding coats from slipping, some of them are equipped with leg loops. Riding vents provide additional comfort. Most rain coats are equipped with a hood to keep your head dry during stable work or ground work when you are not wearing a riding helmet. For more information, feel free to read our rain coat guide.

Advantages: rain coats provide reliable protection from rain due to their waterproof material.

Disadvantages: If the rain coat is not lined, a fleece jacket or a warm jumper should be worn underneath.
