Which fly masks are suitable for ponies?
Depending on how much hair your pony has, flies and black flies can get on your pony's nerves in the summer or even cause eye inflammation. If your pony has very little hair to cover their eyes, a fly mask is a good idea. This should fit tightly so that no flies or other insects can crawl underneath and then be trapped between the mask and the horse's head. At the same time, the fly mask must have a sufficiently large distance to the eyes so that there is no eye irritation due to friction.
Fly mask designs are cut very differently. The way to find the right fly mask for your pony is usually trial and error. At Kramer Equestrian you can buy fly masks for ponies with and without a forelock cut-out and with and without a nose extension. Fly masks with an elastic hem are advantageous, so that the mask can adapt to the pony's head without being too tight or protruding.
Which fly mask for ponies has UV protection?
Every fly mask offers a slight UV protection, as textiles already intercept some of the sun's radiation. However, there are fly masks for ponies that go one step further and come with integrated UV protection. The level of protection depends on the density of the fabric and the type of fabric. In our online shop you can buy fly masks with UV protection 60+ and more for ponies. If you have a pony with a pale nose that tends to sunburn easily, a fly mask with UV protection plus (removable) nose extension is recommended.
Why does my pony need a fly veil?
Black flies and gnats like to get into the horse's ears and not only cause an itching. In the worst case, they can also cause bloody scabs in the ears. In the field, fly masks for the pony are suitable as ear protection. When riding, however, a fly mask under the bridle can be a nuisance. In this case, a fly veil is preferable. This can give the pony peace from the annoying insects, whereupon it does not have to constantly shake its head to get rid of them. A fly veil can make the ride more pleasant even in insect-ridden times.
Which fly veil is suitable for ponies with a thick forelock?
Some pony breeds have a lot of mane and forelock hair. This could become problematic when wearing a fly mask without forelock cut out. This is because the amount of hair under the mask not only leads to heavy sweating or limited visibility of the pony. The thick forelock could push the mask upwards, creating openings for flies to find their way into the mask. So when buying a fly mask for your pony, make sure that there is a forelock cut out through which you can pull through the long hair.
Alternatively, we have pony fly masks that are ear free in our range. In this case, the fly mask is closed at the nape of the neck with a hook and loop fastener. The eyes are completely covered, while the ears remain free. This is also suitable for ponies with a lot of mane hair.
Which fly rug is suitable for ponies?
Ponies exist in countless builds, which is why there is no one suitable fly rug for all ponies. When buying a pony fly rug, look for plenty of adjustment options on the surcingles and chest straps. A gusset is recommended for ponies with wide shoulders to prevent the rug from stretching and slipping. Alternatively, you can choose a fly-walker rug with a shoulder cut-out to give the shoulder plenty of freedom of movement. Ponies with thick manes or a predisposition to sweet itch should wear a sweet itch rug that also covers the neck well and shields from flies.
In our pony fly protection range you can buy fly rugs for ponies from 3ft 6in upwards as well as sweet itch fly rugs for ponies that cover larger areas of your horse. Our range for ponies is completed with fly and sweet itch masks and neck pieces so that your pony can enjoy the summer months as relaxed and itch-free as possible.
What size should the fly rug for ponies be?
The same rules apply for measuring fly rugs as for other horse rugs. Use a soft tape measure and measure horizontally from the center of the chest to the end of the rump. Now compare your measurement with the specifications of the respective item in our online shop. We offer fly rugs for ponies from a size 3ft 6in.
Ponies with a thick neck may have problems with their size. In this case you can either choose one size larger. Or, if only an inch or so is missing, a chest extender for horse rugs can help to avoid this problem.
