Which bit size is suitable for Shetland ponies?
Shetland ponies do not have a lot of space in their mouths, which is why the bit has to be very thin. Even more critical is the length of the bit. This can quickly turn out to be too long for Shetland ponies. This is problematic because the joint of the single jointed bit presses against the sensitive palate and the bit parts exert pressure on the outer bars. It is therefore important to choose a bit that is not only thin enough but also adapted to the length of the mouth.
In the end, it is again a question of trial and error. In general, a bit thickness of 12mm is recommended for Shetland ponies. The length of the bit can vary between 10.5 and 12.5cm. However, these are not fixed values; each Shetland pony has to be considered individually. At Kramer Equestrian you will find the right bit even for the smallest Shetland pony, because our range includes pony loose ring snaffle bits from 9.5cm. If the continuous rings of the loose ring snaffle get stuck in the mouth corners, you can help out with bit discs. You can find these in our accessories for pony bridles.
Which pony bit sizes are available?
For the pony bit, correct fit, minimum thickness and bit length must be observed. The minimum thickness of pony bits should be at least 10mm at the mouth creases. The pony bit is usually offered with a length of 7cm to 11.5cm.
In our online shop you can find pony bits as single or jointed loose ring snaffle bits. You can also choose between pony bits with fixed rings, such as eggbut snaffle bits, D-ring snaffles or full cheek snaffle bits. We also offer plastic or rubber bits for ponies.
