Which riding jacket is suitable for winter?
A thick winter jacket or a riding coat that is taken off when riding is recommended for winter. A fleece jacket and a long-sleeved shirt can be worn underneath. In combination with a pair of warming winter breeches, you are perfectly equipped. A riding jacket for winter should first and foremost have warming properties without being too bulky. Imiatation down is suitable as a filling, as it is almost as warm as real down. It is easy to care for and does not clump together when washed, which is why there are no unpleasant cold spots.
A winter riding jacket should be breathable, windproof and water-repellent so that you stay dry even in a light sleet shower. A high collar supplements the effect of a scarf. A cosy, warm hood, which is detachable for practical reasons, will keep your ears warm. You can also find fluffy hats or ear warmers that clip onto your riding hat in our online shop.
Lined pockets are a big plus for freezing fingers. In winter, a ride can quickly turn into a night trek. Therefore, your winter riding jacket should have reflective details to increase your visibility.
At Kramer Equestrian you will find a large selection of winter riding jackets for women, which not only have the functional properties of a riding jacket for the winter. With their figure-flattering cuts and fashionable colours, our winter riding jackets are a real eye-catcher.
What makes a good winter riding jacket?
- Breathable, windproof and water-repellent.
- Effective heat insulation due to fleece or imitation down lining
- Riding slit for optimum comfort in the saddle
- Longer cut at the back
- High collar with (detachable) hood
- Adjustable waist
- Elasticated cuffs and waistband
- Reflective details
What material should the winter riding jacket be made of?
- Warming, easy-care filling made of imitation down.
- Inside with cosy fleece or teddy fleece.
- Outer material made of windproof and water-repellent synthetic fibre, such as polyester or polyamide.
The inside of a winter riding jacket for the stable can be equipped with fleece or teddy fleece to keep you cosy and warm.
Windproof and water-repellent synthetic fibres, such as polyester or polyamide, have proven effective as outer materials. Both synthetic fibres are easy to care for, hard-wearing and hardly absorb any moisture. So you'll be kept warm even if you get wet.
How long should the winter riding jacket be?
A winter riding jacket should be long enough to cover the hips. Also, when you bend down or crouch down to reach your horse's hooves, the winter jacket should not expose your back by riding up. At Kramer Equestrian you can buy winter jackets that are longer at the back than at the front and extend all the way to the buttocks. This way you avoid the danger of your back getting cold.
If you are prone to chilly thighs, you can opt for a riding coat that reaches down to the knees or riding boots, depending on the style. So that you are not disturbed by the length of the winter jacket, it is important to have a riding slit at the back that can be opened by means of a zip or press studs as required.
Can I ride with a normal winter jacket?
You can ride in a normal winter jacket. It should be robust, breathable, water-repellent and windproof. Be aware that fashionable details such as loose straps, belts, decorative cords etc. can lead to dangerous accidents. Winter riding jackets do not include such accessories to minimise the risk to your safety.
Ordinary winter jackets can become uncomfortable when riding, as soon as the long-cut hem hits the rim of the saddle and the jacket slides upwards. Or the rider sits on the long hem, which can significantly disturb the rider's seat. Therefore, it makes sense to buy a winter riding jacket with a riding slit that can be opened by means of a zip or press studs.
