Which riding hats are suitable for children?
The child must wear a riding hat from the first riding lesson onwards. A riding hat for children in accordance with the current riding hat standard is therefore compulsory.
However, children quickly outgrow their sizes, so that even a riding hat can quickly become obsolete. To counteract this, riding hats with an infinitely variable size adjustment wheel are recommended. In addition, a three-point harness is important so that the riding hat fits securely. At Kramer Equestrian you will find a colourful mix of children's riding hats that meet all safety standards. In addition, they grow with your child thanks to individual size adjustment, so that your child can enjoy their first riding hat for a long time to come. We strongly advise against using a bicycle helmet as head protection when riding or handling the horse. A fall from a horse is usually different from a fall from a bicycle. Furthermore, a bicycle helmet cannot withstand the impact of a horse's hoof due to its lightweight construction.
Which standards should the children's riding hat comply with?
Just like a riding hat for adults, a children's riding hat should comply with the current riding hat standards EN1384:2023. Please check with the riding school or competition organiser which safety standard is required/allowed.
What size riding hat does my child need?
The riding hat size is determined by the circumference of the child's head. Put a measuring tape around the head, just above the eyebrows. Compare the result of the measurement with the size chart in the product description of the respective hat.
Our children's riding hats can be optimally adjusted to the individual head shape and size thanks to the 3-point size adjustment and the continuously adjustable wheel at the back of the head. When trying on, make sure that the hat does not wobble or slip when the chin strap is open. If it does, choose a hat size smaller. At the same time, the children's riding hat must not press uncomfortably, otherwise it can cause headaches. Good padding is therefore also important for wearing comfort.
When do I have to replace the children's riding hat?
A children's riding hat should be replaced at the very latest after a fall or after a few years without a fall if worn regularly. However, children can quickly outgrow their hat size, so they often do not reach the recommended time frame. A riding hat that can grow with the child to a certain extent is still recommended.
In our online shop you will find children's riding hats from Felix Bühler, Ride-a-Head and uvex with a continuously adjustable size adjustment wheel, which makes the hat individually adaptable to the head circumference.
How does the children's riding hat fit properly?
In order for the riding hat to provide optimal safety for the child's head, it must also fit correctly. Pay attention to the following points:
- The riding hat sits centrally on the head
- It does not sit too far back on the neck or in the forehead.
- The ears must lie freely in the three-point strap.
- The hat sits two finger widths above the eyebrows.
- When the chin strap is open, the hat must not slide backwards or forwards too much.
Which riding hat for children is the safest?
All of our riding hats for children are certified and comply with the current safety standards and have the recommended three-point harness. You will therefore only find safe children's riding hats in the Kramer Equestrian assortment. They only differ in terms of comfort and design. However, we recommend that you check with the riding school if a specific safety standard is required.
