What is the basic equipment for horse grooming?
The contents of the grooming box look different for every horse owner. Everyone has different preferences when it comes to choosing grooming equipment for horse care. The most important basics that should be found in every grooming box are as follows:
- Curry combs
- Brushes & body brushes
- Combs & brushes for mane & tail
- Hoof pick for hoof cleaning
- Sponges & sweat scraper for horse washing
- Various ''nice to have'' items, such as massage curry comb
Curry combs ensure that dirt is brought to the surface and dried mud stains are loosened. Currycombs are available in different types, e.g. made of metal, rubber or hard plastic. Note: A curry comb is taboo on sensitive areas, especially on the legs and head! Where bones and tendons lie directly under the skin, a metal curry comb can be very uncomfortable for the horse.
After the curry comb has loosened the coarse dirt, you can do the final cleaning with a brush or a soft body brush. The fine bristles pick up the dust from the coat and hold it. On the sensitive legs, where the hard brush is not used, you can remove the coarse dirt with a dandy brush with hard bristles. For the mane and tail, dandy brushes are also excellent for loosening the toughest knots before using a mane and tail brush to brush away the last tangled long hairs.
A hoof pick is indispensable for cleaning the hooves. A hoof pick with an integrated brush is particularly practical. Alternatively, you can use a separate hoof brush for the coarse dirt on and under the hoof.
After training and in summer when temperatures are high, it is part of horse care to clean the horse of sweat with a bath. Sponges are suitable for gently working in the horse shampoo. In addition to a sponge for washing the horse, it is also advisable to have a separate sponge for the eyes, nostrils and anus region for hygienic reasons. After the shower, you can scrap the horse with a sweat scraper to remove excess water easily and quickly so that the horse dries faster. Sheepskin grooming mitts or a massage brush are among the ''nice to have'' items that will make your horse shine and do him some good. If you want to clean your horse deeply, you can buy a horse vaccum cleaner with different brush attachments.
