What is the effect of a double-jointed bit?
In contrast to a single-jointed bit, a double-jointed bit consists of two bit parts that are joined together with an olive-shaped centre piece. A double-jointed bit therefore has two joints. This means that the bit rests on and acts on the horse's tongue and lower jaw. A double-jointed bit lies more calmly in the mouth than a single-jointed bit, because it can adapt better to the tongue. The adaptability distributes the pressure over the width of the tongue.
But be careful: If the horse pulls too hard on a single-jointed bit, he can escape the pressure by pressing the bit against his palate, but this is not possible with a double-jointed bit. If you pull too hard on both sides of the reins, the tongue can be squeezed. In our online shop you can buy double -jointed bits in different variations: as loose ring bit, eggbutt bit, D-ring bit, as double-jointed full cheek bit, as well as plastic bits. In addition, the centre pieces of our double-jointed bits differ: in addition to b>olive-shaped centre pieces, you can also buy bits with a gentle roller as a centre piece.
What is the difference between a D-ring bit and an eggbutt bit?
An eggbutt bit and a D-ring are bits with rings that are fixed to the bit parts. So the rings do not run through. Their stability gives the horse a lateral limit, which can be an advantage especially in the sideways pointing rein aids. In addition, the risk of the horse getting his lips caught in the rings is reduced to a minimum.
In their mode of action, eggbutt bits do not differ from D-ring bits. The only difference is the more angular shape of the rings of a D-ring bit.
Which bit promotes good activity of the horse's mouth?
To promote the horse's mouth activity, you can use bits made of copper or with copper inlays. The sweet taste of copper encourages the horse to chew. The same effect is achieved by plastic bits with apple flavour, which you can find in our online shop.
But the structure of the bit also has an influence on the horse's mouth activity: For example, a rolling middle piece on a double-jointed bit can lead to increased chewing activity.
