What is the best way to clean the bit?
The bit may be heavily soiled after riding due to saliva and feed residue. The easiest and quickest way to clean it is to clean it with water and then rub it dry with a towel. Be careful not to hold the leather bridle under the water jet, as too much moisture can make the leather brittle. Never use a wire brush on the bit, as the hard bristles will scratch the metal. Scratches on the bit can form sharp edges and cause the bit to rust. Therefore, always make sure that the bit is in perfect condition. Alternatively, you can remove dried food residues on the metal with a small cleaning brush whose bristles do not scratch the bit.
In our online shop you will also find various accessories that can be combined with the bits to achieve an even better effect. These include, for example, bit guards or pelham roundings. Should you ever lose an accessory, you can also buy curb chains, curb chain guards and curb chain hooks here.
How do you get the bit shiny again?
Ideally, you should clean the bit immediately after use to prevent residues from drying. Good care also prevents surface changes to the material, which can otherwise be caused by food residues and saliva. If you want to get the bit shiny again, you should take a look at the material.
Metal bits can be polished to a shine with a metal polish. These usually contain small polishing particles that bring shine without damaging the material. Here you should keep a critical eye on the compatibility: The polish should be food-safe and skin-friendly so that the horse's health is not endangered. Alternatively, you can use a denture cleaner for humans or baking soda and vinegar. For bits that are not made of stainless steel or any other metal, you should be careful with such cleaners. Make sure you know what kind of material you are using so that you do not damage the bit.
Copper bits or bits with copper inlays can oxidise and darken over time when exposed to saliva. Again, you can use a compatible metal polish, which you can buy in our online shop. Dark discolouration of copper bits is not usually a reason to replace the bit. Only if sharp edges form on the bit parts or in the ring holes should you get a new bit.
