How can I protect my horse against flies & horseflies?

As beautiful as the summer months and the grazing season can be, for horses this period also means a great nuisance from flies, horseflies and other mosquitoes. Not only do they tickle the skin, their bites also cause an unpleasant itchiness that can lead to allergic overreactions in some horses. Robust breeds in particular, such as the Icelandic horse, suffer from an increased immune response to the mosquito venom, causing chronic itching, whereupon the horse starts scratching and rubbing intensely: the horse has sweet itch.

How can I protect my horse against flies & UV rays?

Despite the coat, the high sunlight and the associated UV radiation can harm the horse in the long run. Especially if there is no shelter such as a hut or trees available on the pasture. Fly protection and UV protection can be excellently combined.
The horse's head is best protected from the sun's rays by means of a fly mask or fly veil. From our range of Felix Bühler fly masks you can buy fly veils with integrated UV protection.
