Why does an equestrian company make dog coats?
- For over 55 years, Kramer Equestrian has been developing high-quality horse rugs that have to withstand the highest demands. Many horses spend the whole day in the field and need a rug that is not only comfortable to wear, but also extremely hard-wearing, waterproof and breathable all at the same time.
- It has always been close to our hearts to transfer our decades of expertise in the development of horse rugs to high-quality dog coats. The huge demand for dog coats surprised even us and so our sugar dog label became an insider tip for dog owners outside of the equestrian scene. In recent years we have steadily expanded and improved the range of dog coats.
- New cuts and materials are tested and optimised for months by our purchasing team and of course their own dogs, in order to develop durable dog coats that are suitable for everyday use.
- Due to our direct sales and the large quantities of purchased horse rugs, we have significant cost advantages in procurement, so that we can offer high-quality dog coats at an unbeatable price/performance ratio!
When can a dog coat be useful?
- Short-haired dogs: For dog breeds with short fur or little undercoat, a dog coat offers protection from the cold and wind.
- Mediterranean dogs: Many dog breeds or mixed breeds from animal shelters originate in warmer climates; therefore can freeze in colder temperatures, icy wind or rain and can even become ill as a result.
- Older dogs, sick dogs or puppies: They need more protection from the weather due to an often weakened immune system. Discomfort from chronic back, joint or skin problems can also be alleviated with dog coats.
- Sporty dogs: Even during breaks in dog training, coats prevent the dog from cooling down and can thus help to prevent injuries to tendons and muscles.
How do I choose the right dog coat?
When choosing the right dog coat, it is important that your dog can move well in it. It is important to note that many dogs that have never worn a dog coat before often need a short period of time to get used to it. The dog coat should not be too tight, as this will restrict your dog's freedom of movement, nor too big, as dog coats that are too long can interfere with the natural flow of movement. In our size chart, you will find a helpful diagram to help you measure your dog and choose the correct back length.
Of course, you should also ask yourself what the dog coat should be able to do and what weather conditions and requirements it should be able to withstand.
The following icons indicate the specific features of our dog coats:
- Waterproof: Most of our waterproof raincoats have a water column of 3,000 mm: upper materials are considered waterproof from a water column of 1,300 mm/sqm/24 h. A water column of 3,000 mm/sqm means that a cylinder filled with water at 60 mbar/min can be filled to a height of 3,000 mm before the water penetrates the fabric.
- Taped seams: Taped or welded seams prevent water from penetrating through the seams of the coat. This is particularly important during heavy rainfall to ensure proper protection against moisture penetration.
- Denier: Denier is a unit of measurement. It describes the ratio of mass or weight to length. In other words, denier is the unit for the thickness of the thread or yarn used in fabricating a material. The larger/higher the number, the thicker or stronger the material. You can find dog coats with a thickness of up to 600 denier in our range.
- Breathable: Breathability refers to the ability of a man-made or natural fibre to allow the body's own water vapour to escape. Breathable textiles enable rapid drying during use and thus prevent both heat build-up and cooling due to accumulated moisture. Scientifically proven, dogs do not sweat through their fur or skin. Their thermoregulation works via panting and sweat glands on their paws. Nevertheless, a breathable textile provides a more comfortable climate and is therefore also important for dog clothing!
- Windproof: Windproof material offers solid protection against the dangerous wind chill effect caused by the convective dissipation of body heat. Wind can accelerate the equalisation of the skin surface temperature with the ambient temperature, resulting in a cooling effect.
- Filling of the rug in grams: The number of grams determines how thickly the dog coat is lined. The filling is located between the outer material and the inner lining. We therefore offer a wide range of coats from 0-400g filling to protect your dog in any temperature, physical condition and coat condition.
- Reflective: Most of our outdoor dog coats have reflective features that reflect light when it falls on them, thus increasing safety in road traffic. This draws the attention of other road users to humans and animals at an early stage. Particularly during winter months, walks cannot always take place in the daylight.
